100 Abandoned Houses

"The abandoned houses project began innocently enough roughly ten years ago. I actually began photographing abandonment in Detroit in the mid 90’s as a creative outlet, and as a way of satisfying my curiosity with the state of my home town. I had always found it to be amazing, depressing, and perplexing that a once great city could find itself in such great distress, all the while surrounded by such affluence.

Brush Park, on the outskirts of Detroit’s entertainment district was always an area of interest to me. For as long as I can remember the area, housing large houses and mansions, sat largely abandoned just a stones throw away from the Fox Theater, and not far from Wayne State University, the Masonic Theater, and even the central business district. How could an area that was obviously once a wealthy enclave in the city become an example of the downfall of American cities?

For years the area had signs advertising the redevelopment that was about to take place. It finally began to happen, with the construction of the new ballpark for the Tigers, and Ford Field for the Lions. New condos, and town homes began to appear amidst the rubble of burned out mansions turned apartments. Some of the houses were so large they became “loft condos”. As the entertainment district flourished, and Brush Park began to transform into something new, I realized the other approximately 135 square miles of Detroit was largely ignored. The excitement about Detroit’s “rebirth” took center stage, while much of the rest of the city was becoming largely abandoned. Even Brush Park itself was still largely abandoned, but with the remaining tenants of Brush Park buildings being pushed out, and many of the old houses torn down, I moved on to other areas, where Detroiters were attempting to make a life among abandoned and burned out houses. Often times, the neighborhoods were almost completely abandoned. In these neighborhoods I encountered concerned citizens, packs of wild dogs, 20 foot high piles of toilets, and houses with the facades torn off, filled with garbage.

As the number of images grew, and a documentary style emerged, I switched from mostly black and white, to color, and decided to name the series 100 Abandoned Houses. 100 seemed like a lot, although the number of abandoned houses in Detroit is more like 12,000. Encompassing an area of over 138 square miles, Detroit has enough room to hold the land mass of San Francisco, Boston, and Manhattan Island, yet the population has fallen from close to 2 million citizens, to most likely less than 800,000. With such a dramatic decline, the abandoned house problem is not likely to go away any time soon."

Wayne State University's Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society (FOCIS) is pleased to present award-winning scientist, environmentalist, and broadcaster Dr. David Suzuki for a discussion on the greatest challenge of the 21st century. Dr. Suzuki will discuss local ecosystems, local communities and humanity's need to rediscover its place in the world, so that the planet can continue to flourish. He is renowned for his radio and television programs that explain the complexities of the natural sciences in a compelling, easily understood way.

About David Suzuki

David SuzukiIn a special Earth Week presentation, FOCIS welcomes David Suzuki, an award-winning scientist, broadcaster and sustainable ecology expert. Suzuki will deliver a lecture on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. in the Community Arts Auditorium.

Dr. Suzuki, co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation, is an environmentalist who is renowned for his radio and television programs that explain the complexities of the natural sciences in a compelling, easily understood format.

An accomplished geneticist, Dr. Suzuki graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts in 1958 with an honors BA in biology, followed by a PhD in zoology from the University of Chicago. He held a research associateship in the Biology Division of Tennessee’s Oak Ridge National Lab. He has been an assistant professor in genetics at the University of Alberta and a faculty member of the University of British Columbia. Dr. Suzuki is also a professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia's Sustainable Development Research Institute.

In 1972, Dr. Suzuki was awarded the EWR Steacie Memorial Fellowship as an outstanding research scientist in Canada under the age of 35. He has won numerous academic awards and has written 43 books, including 17 for children. His 1976 textbook, An Introduction to Genetic Analysis (with A.J.F. Griffiths), remains the most widely used genetics text book in the US and has been translated into Italian, Spanish, Greek, Indonesian, Arabic, French and German.

Dr. Suzuki has consistently received high acclaim for his 30 years of award-winning work in broadcasting. In 1974, he developed and hosted the long-running popular science program, Quirks and Quarks, on CBC Radio.

I was immediately drawn to these works by Ruby Palmer. Something is so visually comforting about the arrangements of these wall pieces. I have an orderly/linear compulsion slash obsession I guess.

Ruby Palmer was born in Boston in 1969 and spent the majority of her childhood in rural Pennsylvania. She attended Hampshire College and received her BA in Painting and Drawing in 1992. After a few years roaming the western states, she landed in Brooklyn in 1995. In 2000 she received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts and continues to live and work in Brooklyn.

Urban Gardening Program Encourages Revitalization

Ever since I read about Floret, a floral design company and flower farm in Skagit Valley, I've been reinspired to start growing my own flowers and herbs. Floret specializes in creating unique seasonal arrangements from sustainably grown plant materials from their gardens, which are "bursting with an abundant supply of flowering trees, rare shrubs, vines, bulbs, perennials, annuals and uncommon vegetables." So, what's keeping me, and many down town Detroit residents, from achieving garden bliss? I live in a studio apartment with very little natural sunlight or space for growing the garden of my dreams, enter the Urban Gardening Program!

Gardeners of All Ages & Skill Levels Needed to Help Revitalize Michigan’s Urban Neighborhoods By Growing Green This Spring encourages revitalization, expands access to fresh foods

The Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority (MLBFTA), an agency in the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG), recently launched the “Garden for Growth” program that enables Michigan residents to use tax-reverted property to create urban gardens.

This program not only encourages urban revitalization but also supports the Governor Jennifer M. Granholm’s urban food initiative by making fresh and healthy foods available to city-dwellers.

The land can be used for vegetable, flower, native plant or educational gardens.

“This program is exciting because it brings together neighbors to beautify once vacant tax-reverted properties and strengthen local neighborhoods,” Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth Director Stanley “Skip” Pruss. “We envision these gardens as a place for community members to meet, for children to learn the wonders of planting seeds, or to create sources of healthy food in our cities.”

MLBFTA is encouraging interested individuals or non-profit organizations to lease vacant parcels of land for only $50 per year to create an agricultural space in their community. Interested gardeners should visit the Michigan Land Bank’s website at www.michigan.gov/landbank to begin choosing a parcel today for the spring season.

The opportunity to lease a vacant lot will allow gardeners to clear, use and maintain vacant lots in their neighborhood without the tax or other financial burdens associated with ownership. Successful gardeners may be able to purchase their parcel, if they later decide that they want a permanent garden at that location. Any types of gardening or agricultural activities qualify as long as they are not illegal and do not violate local zoning codes.

In the most recent issue of Sunset Magazine I found this charming article "Top 10 Portland Food Carts: The food carts in this Oregon town are more like mobile gourmet kitchens."

I want to dine at them all! Until that is a possibility, I'll be trying out this little recipe which caught my eye:

Eggs and Greens

Time: About 50 minutes. At Moxie Rx, Nancye Benson tops bowls of beautiful local salad greens with perfectly fried eggs, crisp slivers of leeks, and a fresh-thyme vinaigrette.
Yield

Serves 6
Ingredients

* 1 large leek (about 1/2 lb.), white and light green parts only, halved lengthwise and rinsed well
* 4 1/2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
* About 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
* About 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
* 1/3 cup pine nuts
* 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
* 2 garlic cloves, minced
* 1 teaspoon chopped fresh regular or lemon thyme leaves
* 1/2 pound cremini mushrooms, thinly sliced (3 cups)
* 3 ounces thinly sliced smoked salmon, torn into small pieces
* 6 large eggs
* 6 ounces salad mix (2 1/2 qts. lightly packed)

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Cut leek lengthwise into thin slivers. In a rimmed baking pan, toss leek with 1/2 tbsp. olive oil and sprinkle with a pinch or two of salt and pepper. Bake leek slivers, stirring often, until some are golden and beginning to crisp, 10 to 15 minutes. Meanwhile, put pine nuts in a shallow pan and bake until golden, 8 to 10 minutes.

2. In a large bowl, combine 3 tbsp. olive oil, the lemon juice, garlic, thyme, 1/2 tsp. salt, and 1/4 tsp. pepper. Add mushrooms and salmon, then mix gently to coat.

3. Warm remaining 1 tbsp. olive oil in a 12-in. nonstick frying pan over medium heat. Crack eggs into pan, spacing them evenly. When whites are set, in 2 to 3 minutes, carefully flip eggs over (start with first egg put in pan). Cook until yolks are softly set, about 30 seconds.

4. Add salad mix to bowl with mushrooms and toss to coat. Divide salad mixture among 6 plates. Top each with a fried egg, some pine nuts, and some leek slivers. Season with more salt and pepper to taste.

We Swim

As a Michigan resident, I look forward to Summer for about 9 months out of the year. As someone who has lived in Hawaii and the gentler seasons of Washington State, I've never seen anyone take advantage of the warm weather more than Michiganders do, we've really learned to make the most of the warmer months, and by months I mean 3 tops, I plan to carry on this tradition in the perfect swim suit this year.
